Naomi Davis

SENIOR LITERARY AGENT

  • Naomi Davis is a life-long author-fanatic with an obsession for slippers, drag, singing, and fabulous stories. They are passionate about immersive fantasy, thought-provoking science fiction, and contemporary romance in Adult and YA. Living and working on Treaty 7 territory on Turtle Island, in what has been called Canada, has given the opportunity to learn the stories of the land and its original stewards prior to colonization. Naomi views fiction as a way to more deeply understand the world around them, and to gain windows into perspectives they may not have otherwise encountered. Naomi is genderqueer and nonbinary (yes, both) and happy with either pronoun, they/them or she/her, and loves to refer to themself as a Literary Gaygent.

  • Naomi prioritizes stories written by marginalized authors across all spectrums and genres. They love themes of unexpected found family, morally complex characters, and powerful platonic connections. Think of them for projects with sharp voices and unreliable narrators, as well as weird blends of genres perhaps not as often seen. In Adult, seeks Speculative Fiction, including fantasy, sci fi, horror, and any blend of these (romantasy, horrormance, and... science fictionmance?), and the same is true in YA but with a focus on queer YA contemporary novels.

In Fantasy, Naomi loves both the epic and the intimate; escapist and dark. Expansive worlds or dark and voicey narratives spark both their excitement for the limitless nature of speculative fiction as well as the anxiety of the unknown. Naomi loves being anchored firmly into a strong character perspective to absorb a new world they've never explored before. They're not afraid of a solid tragedy, and also love being swept away by a HEA or HFN ending. In Science Fiction, Naomi veers toward grounded or expansive stories focused on the magic of exploring what is possible in our universe, rather than governments and military casts of characters. Speculative fiction has such potential for being a landscape for digging into relevant topics and current issues, and Naomi loves to see genres smashed together in surprising ways to bring a new audience to established, long-standing strategies for publishing success.

In Contemporary, Naomi primarily seeks YA stories that highlight the experience of being queer in today's world for young people. Naomi welcomes coming out stories and stories of queer joy as well as realistic representations of queer struggle in this increasingly-polarized world. Romance, queerplatonic relationships, or ace-spec representation are encouraged. If you think your book might get banned for being too in-your-face queer, you should probably try querying Naomi with it. Stories across the spectrums of gender, sexuality, and neurodivergence are encouraged in both YA and Adult - however Naomi feels strongly that right now is a moment in our world where queer youth need both extra glimmers of hope, as well as context for resistance, and is extremely eager to see this in YA. Naomi found both hope and strength for themself in fiction as a teen, and wants to support those stories in their pivotal role of building a better future for everyone.
