We have seen a disturbing uptake in scammers impersonating agents at BookEnds (as well as other agencies) and ask authors to be vigilant and talk with others before connecting with scam agents.

How do I know if it’s a scam agent?

While most agents rely on queries to take on new authors, it is also true that at times agents will reach out to an author via social media or another venue—especially if an email address is not easily found. This is especially true for self-published authors, or nonfiction authors with a large platform.

If this happens to you, our first suggestion is: instead of responding to the DM or post (especially if you’re unsure if it’s the actual agent’s profile), email the agent directly and separately from the email they supplied you with by going to the agency website and finding either the agent’s email or reaching out through a general email.

In the case of BookEnds, all of our email addresses end in BookEndsLiterary.com. All emails follow a standard format of first initial + last name @ bookendsliterary.com.

Example: Jessica Faust “jfaust@bookendsliterary.com”

If you are unsure if an email you received is legitimate, please do not hesitate to reach out to info@bookendsliterary.com.

If an agent has reached out to you and is asking for money upfront, this is red flag number one. Reputable literary agents are paid on commission only when the author is paid. So no literary agents should ever be asking for money upfront.

Reminder: BookEnds agents do not accept queries via email. Please do not send any unsolicited querying materials outside of QueryManager, which you can find linked on each agent’s profile.

We do not represent original screenplays or teleplays. Our focus is on literary work intended for book publication. You can learn more about what genres and formats we handle by exploring our Agents page.
